If you have dark underams there are several good products on the market you can buy (I thoroughly recommend this dark armpit treatment)
However if money is tight there are plenty of underarm whitening home remedies you can try.
With all these underarm whitening tips I recommend that you try to avoid using deodorants and antiperspirants if at all possible because these contain chemicals that make the underarms go darker.
Instead you should try natural deodorants (you can buy ones that include baking soda, rose water or coconut oil, for example) or try making your own one at home.
OK, let’s now look at ways you can whiten underarms at home.
Underarm Whitening #1 – Lemon Slices
Lemon is a natural bleaching agent, as well as having excellent antibacterial properties.
Cut up a lemon into a few slices
Rub one of the slices against your underarm a few times and leave the moisture there for approximately 5 minutes.
Wash off thoroughly with mildly soapy, lukewarm water and pat dry
Repeat with the other underarm.
Let both underarms dry naturally and thoroughly before applying deodorant. Ideally it is best not to apply any deodorant for a few hours, so it is best to to do this at night.
Repeat for 15 days and notice the difference.
Underarm Whitening #2 – Sliced Potatoes
Take any potato and with a knife slice it into a few pieces.
Using one of the potato slices, rub it up and down against your underarm a few times, allowing the moisture to sit there.
It might feel a bit gross, but stay with it!
Repeat on the other underarm with another potato slice.
After about 20 minutes, wash both underarms gently and pat dry with a towel.
Avoid applying deodorant too soon afterwards if you can.
Let the potatoes work their magic!
For best results do this daily.
Underarm Whitening #3 – Milk
Take a glass or bowl and pour a few inches of milk into it.
Take a small sponge and dab it into the milk, making sure to soak up some of the milk.
Use the sponge to wipe against the dark underarm, making sure to cover the area with the milk.
This can be a bit tricky as some of the milk might run down your arm, but re-apply more milk if necessary.
Repeat with the other dark underarm.
After about 15 minutes wash each underarm and dry with a towel.
Repeat this process daily for 3 weeks and you should soon have lighter underarms.
Underarm Whitening #4 – Baking Soda and Lemon Juice
The baking soda acts as an exfoliant, rubbing away dead skin cells. The lemon juice as we saw above has powerful antibacterial properties. Together they make a powerful combinmation!
In a small container mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 equal part of lemon juice.
Mix with a spoon until it forms a rough paste.
Apply the paste liberally to each underarm, taking care that it covers the dark areas.
Allow the paste to sit there for 5 minutes and then wash off thoroughly and dry.
Repeat this process every other day (approximately 3-4 times per week).
Underarm Whitening #5 – Baking Soda and Coconut Oil
In a small pot add one part baking soda with one part coconut oil – enough to make a paste for both underarms.
Stir well and apply paste to each underarm with a moist cloth or sponge.
Using circular motions, scrub each underarm alternately for a few minutes. The baking soda will do some exfoliating here.
Allow the paste to sit there for about 5-10 minutes.
Wash each underarm gently, but thoroughly, and dry.
Repeat 3-4 times per week for best underarm whitening results.
Underarm Whitening #6 – Cucumber
Perfect if you have a cucumber lying around in the refrigerator.
Squeeze some cucumber juice into a small pot and add a squeeze of lemon juice (antiseptic!) and a pinch of turmeric.
What do these ingredients do?
Cucumber provides cooling properties (you may have used them on your eyes before) but it’s juice alone has skin-whitening effects.
Lemon juice is antibacterial and deodorising.
Turmeric prevents discoloration.
Apply the mixture to your dark underarm areas with a small cloth and allow it to soak in for about 5 minutes.
Wash off and dry, repeat a few times a week. Within a few days you should start noticing your underarm skin lightening in colour.
Underarm Whitening #7 – Saffron
Saffron may be quite expensive but a little goes a long way. It has excellent antibacterial properties too, so maybe you can save on your deodorant bills!
Take a few strands of saffron and mix it with a little milk.
Apply the saffron milk mixture liberally to your underarms and allow to dry.
I would recommend you do this just before bed. The dried solution can work its magic overnight.
In the morning, wash as normal.
Repeat as often as necessary, until your underarm skin begins to go noticeably whiter.
Underarm Whitening #8 – Olive Oil
Olive oil is full of antioxidants and is wonderful for your skin (it’s also good on the inside too!)
With this method you make a mixture of olive oil and brown sugar.
Use about 3 tablespoons of olive oil with 1 cup of brown sugar. Mix well to make a paste.
Dampen your underarm skin with water and apply the oil-sugar paste in the dark areas. Leave it there for about 5 minutes.
Wash off and dry your skin.
Repeat twice and week and start noticing the difference as your underarms become whiter over time.
Underarm Whitening #9 – Herbal Extracts
This is a herbal mixture that can be a powerful combination in helping you to whiten your underarms.
You need: liquorice root extract, aspen extract and raspberry extract.
Mix all three together and apply to your moistened underarms.
Leave in place for about half an hour and then wash and rinse off.
These herbs have healing and medicinal qualities and stimulate the production of a compound called “pheomelanin” which helps in lightening the skin.
Use this method daily for the first few weeks and then less frequent as your underarms become whiter.
Underarm Whitening #10 – Orange Peel
Oranges are closely-related to lemons and are citrus fruits, giving them bleaching and anti-bacterial properties. This perfect for getting rid of your dark underarms and lightening the skin.
Take some orange peel and dry it out indoors (not in direct sunlight)
When dried grind the peel into a fine powder.
Mix some milk with rose water and add the powdered orange peel. Adjust quantities until it becomes a thick paste.
Apply paste to the dark underarms and gently scrub area for about 10 minutes.
Wash and rinse with cold water.
Repeat daily until skin whitens and dark patches have disappeared,
Underarm Whitening #11 – Vinegar
Vinegar is very useful because not only does it whiten the skin, it also kills bacteria that feed on dead skin cells, which can be the main cause of bad underarm odor.
In this example, mix vinegar with enough rice flour to form a thick paste. Adjust quantities to suit.
Wash your underarms in warm/hot water in order to open the skin pores.
Apply the paste you just made to your underarms, taking care to completely cover the dark patches.
Allow to stand for about 10-15 minutes until it dries out.
Then wash your underarms with warm water and pat dry with a towel.
Repeat this process 3 times a week and you will have much lighter underarms within a couple of weeks.
Underarm Whitening #12 – Vitamin E Oil
This a bit of a hack but will work great if you have some Vitamin E capsules.
Simply take one of your Vitamin E pills and split the shell.
Carefully squeeze out the oil onto a small sponge and wipe the oil under each of your armpits. You might need to break a second capsule for your other armpit, but that’s OK.
Allow the oil to sit on the skin for a few minutes, them wash off with water and dry.
The added benefit is that as well as whitening the underarms the Vitamin E will make your skin smoother and softer as you apply it regularly.
Underarm Whitening #13 – Yoghurt
Nature’s wonder – natural yoghurt.
Boost the properties by adding some honey – one part honey to two parts yoghurt.
Gently rub the yoghurt and honey mixture all over the armpits and wait a few minutes before washing it all off and drying.
By combining yoghurt and honey you will help to remove the impurities under your arms that causes the discoloration leading to dark armpits.
As an added bonus the mixture makes a wonderful odor neutraliser.
Repeat this process daily for gleaming white armpits.
Underarm Whitening #14 – Honey
Honey is perhaps one of the greatest natural substances for home remedies.
One of its many properties is that it is antibacterial. It is also soothing on the skin.
Mix some honey with some sugar in equal parts with a squirt of lemon juice and mix to form a thick paste.
Apply this paste to the underarms in a circular motion – this exfoliates the skin and removes dead skin cells.
Rinse with warm water and repeat daily. Over a course of time you will have gleaming armpits!
Underarm Whitening #15 – Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is another natural wonder substance.
It can be bought very cheaply and a little goes a long way.
Put a liberal amount of aloe vera gel on a small, soft pad and apply generously to each armpit.
Leave for 20 minutes before washing off gently and drying.
Repeat this daily for whiter armpits. The aloe vera will also calm down any shaving rashes too.
Underarm Whitening #16 – Apples
Why are apples so good at whitening underarms?
Here’s the techy bit: they contain high amounts of chemicals called organic carboxylic compounds.
These compounds kill germs and bacteria which can cause dark armpits.
Take an apple and mash it up as best you can. You want it very pulp-like with the juice retained.
Spread the mashed pulp under each armpit, being careful to keep it in place. Massage your skin with the pulp.
Leave on a few minutes then wash off.
Repeat daily and enjoy your new whiter armpits!
Underarm Whitening #17 – Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is mildly acidic and can keep the skin clear by removing dead skin cells.
Add some water to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and wipe with a small pad underneath the armpits, taking care to cover liberally.
Leave for about half an hour (unless you want to smell of vinegar all day!) and then rinse off.
If you repeat this daily the skin under your arms will whiten over time.
